The new Short Circuit Software

version is now available. 

TORONTO, ON - ARCAD INC. announces the release of Short Circuit Analytic version 1.0 (SCA V1.0) software program short circuit analysis.  
 
Short-Circuit-Analytic (SCA) software performs available fault currents calculations in three-phase electric power systems you are working with. The program takes into consideration electrical parameters of the power supply as well as the power distribution system including utility, cables, bus ducts, transformers, generators, motors etc. SCA automatically converts the entire system into a unique impedance unit from which the short circuit current at each and every point is calculated. The process is simple, efficient and will save you both money and time.


1) Calculate available 3-phase short circuit currents within your power distribution system

2) Compute contributions from generators and motors

3) Print out multi-page single line diagrams

4) Save calculation results and equipment data

Arc Blast Explosive Equivalent Calculations 
The explosive nature of an electric arc has been documented in a number of case studies. The intense heat from an arc flash causes sudden expansion of air resulting in a blast, pressure waves and the resulting explosions rival that of explosive substances. Energies produced by arc flash explosions have been known to propel large objects such as switchboard doors, bus bars and personnel several feet at very high speeds.

Arc Blast Pressure Calculations 
Electric arcs produce some of the highest temperatures known to occur on earth - up to 35000 degrees Fahrenheit, 19500 degree Celsius. This temperature is four times higher than the temperature on the surface of the Sun. The intense heat from an arc causes sudden expansion of air resulting in a blast [...]. The arc flash blast energy or pressure is not currently addressed in IEEE 1584 or NFPA 70E. Ralph Lee's IEEE paper Pressures Developed by Arcs addresses arc blast phenomenon and provides the formula for calculating initial impulse force.

New NFPA 70E 2012 Arc Flash Label Requirements
Previous edition of NFPA 70E from year 2009 required that labels to display either the available incident energy or the minimum arc flash rating for the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Also, every arc flash warning label had to list the system voltage, arc flash boundary, equipment identification and the date of the arc flash analysis listed on it.

AFA V5.0 - new features just added
1. Circuit protection device filter was implemented in main program screen by make it easier locating the upstream protection device by manufacturer name and/or product series.
 
2. Fuse and circuit breaker dialogs were restructured to portray both built-in and customer specific circuit protection devices. You can now click on column headers to sort the devices by source (built-in or added), make, series, current, voltage or I.R. rating.

3. Label list was restructured to let you sorting by label size, heading type and text color by clicking on the respective column header.

4. Fuse and circuit breaker libraries were populated with more low and  medium voltage protection devices.

Arc Flash Data Collection Form
Subject to the selected calculation method, different equipment data is required for an arc flash hazard analysis. We recommend using the IEEE 1584 empirically derived model for arc flash study due to the method's ability to accurately account for a wide variety of setup parameters.

AFA V5.0 - new features just added
1. Print manager. Now you can preview, setup and print labels direct from AFA V5.0.
2. Circuit breaker library. Select a pre-programmed circuit breaker or populate the library with your own custom breaker settings.
3. Extended fuse library. Now includes 10+ Littelfuse Class, R, J, H, L fast acting and time-delay fuse series.
4. Label file name now defaults to equipment name. This feature speeds up the process of saving labels to disk by not having to re-type the file name for each warning label.
5. New label layouts with all text in black color. The reason for this being that some PPE face shields are amber in color to prevent a blinding light during an incident and this makes it difficult to read data or text that is in red.
6. Portuguese language. Now you can also save warning labels in Portuguese.
7. Input data range tips. Instantly see acceptable value ranges. Instantly see acceptable value ranges instead of waiting until the program validates the data and flags the problem.
8. "Not Listed" upstream protection device radio-button. You can enter arc duration manually. This feature is particularly helpful in making a quick inquiry into how arc duration impacts risk hazard and arc flash boundary.

How to perform arc flash analysis in DC power systems
Direct current (DC) arcing fault incident energy calculations are presented to assess the level of risk involved when working around high current DC apparatus. The proposed procedure allows evaluation of incident energy and arc flash boundaries, while taking into account as many circuit parameters as possible. These parameters include fixed or variable gap length, system voltage, available fault current, equipment configuration, circuit time constant and evaluated threshold energy for a second degree burn.

About DCAFA v2.0 

DCAFA v2.0 takes system voltage, prospective short circuit current, gap between electrodes, circuit time constant, protective device type and rating, arc duration, working distance, equipment configuration and determines incident energy, hazard risk category and flash protection boundary.

 

For systems with fixed gap between electrodes, arcing current can be expressed as a function of the length of the gap and arcing voltage. Arcing voltage can be resolved as a function of arcing current, system voltage and the available fault current. DCAFA v2.0 calculates arcing current using the iterative method by cycling through the equations for arcing current and arcing voltage until the answers converge. Then, the software program will determine arc duration based on protective device time-current characteristics and circuit time-constant. Next, the program will calculate incident energy at working distance, arc flash boundary and determine hazard risk category.
