Issue #23 - Short Circuit Current Calculations and Labeling

SHORT CIRCUIT CURRENT CALCULATIONS AND LABELING

For the person whose tasks is the specification, coordination or maintenance of an electrical system, the available short circuit fault current is a major consideration in the selection of circuit protective devices. Knowing the available fault current and applying available fault current labels on new equipment is also now mandated by National Electrical Code. A study must be done to identify the maximum amount of the available short circuit fault current. ARCAD's Short-Circuit-Analytic software performs available fault currents calculations in three-phase electric power systems you are working with. The program takes into consideration electrical parameters of the power supply as well as the power distribution system including utility, cables, bus ducts, transformers, generators, motors etc.

Once the fault current has been calculated, labels made giving the available short circuit fault current, should be applied to the equipment. That information, and the date it was determined, must be put on a label that is field applied to the equipment. The purpose of this requirement is to allow the short circuit current rating (SCCR) of the equipment to be easily compared with the maximum available fault current.

DATA COLLECTION FOR SHORT CIRCUIT AND ARC FLASH STUDY

The arc flash study must be based on accurate, up-to-date information. A single-line diagram is the preferred method of documentation of a power system. It generally represents existing conditions and equipment nameplate data for the portion of the system within the scope of the arc flash study. This may require the person performing the study, or the facility's owner to:
  • Obtain any existing single-line drawings of the facility. ARCAD's short circuit calculations software program will create a simple diagram as data is entered.
  • Verify and update existing single-line diagram to existing conditions.
  • Verify and resolve any equipment labeling and naming issues.

Issue #22 - 2015 NFPA 70E

New year 2015 edition of NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, was released in September 2014 and supersedes all previous editions. The 2015 edition is the tenth time NFPA 70E has been published since it was introduced in 1979. Several terms used throughout NFPA 70E have been changed for the 2015 edition. ARCAD's arc flash calculation software program has been updated in order to conform to the new standard. The most important changes and new program features are listed below:

  1. Nominal system voltage for shock hazard assessment has been revised reflecting changes to NFPA 70E table 130.4(c)(a)
  2. All references to the prohibited approach boundary have been deleted throughout the standard and the AFA V5.0 program. Once the restricted approach boundary was crossed, there were no other requirements in the NFPA 70E 2015 edition.
  3. All label layouts and terminology have been rearranged to meet the new standard requirements.
  4. Personal protective equipment (PPE) recommendations displayed on labels created using the program can be reviewed, edited or reset to default values. The feature will let you making necessarily PPE adjustments required for various tasks in English and a variety of international languages. Also, the PPE requirements in new NFPA 70E standard have changed from previous editions of the standard. They may become different again and the feature will let you reflect the changes as the safety standard evolves.
  5. The program is now memorizing selected label style (including label size, text color, style), optional extra line title, value etc.

AFA V5.0.8 - FEATURES AND CAPABILITIES
  • Detailed arc flash analysis using the IEEE 1584 equations and the Lee method.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, OSHA, NFPA 70E 2015, IEEE P1584 and CSA Z462 standards and regulations.
  • Instantly determine arcing current, incident energy, arc flash, limited, restricted and prohibited shock approach boundaries, hazard level, typical clothing system.
  • Add fuse and circuit breaker data including time-current characteristics for the devices that are not already featured in the built-in protection device library.
  • Perform arc flash boundary calculations based on 1.2 cal/cm^2 (5 Joules/cm^2) onset energy to second degree burn for bare skin exposure per IEEE 1584 Guide and other incident energy levels as well, such as the rating of proposed personal protective equipment, or evaluated onset to second degree burn energy.
  • Create warning labels in English and a variety of international languages.
  • Preview, save, print arc flash labels in high resolution graphic format.
  • Save input configuration, protection device information.
  • Perform analysis using metric, imperial units.
  • Save reports including equipment data, calculation results, warning label.

ARCAD counter-terrorism efforts

ARCAD INC. pledges its total solidarity and support to the government of Ukraine and Ukrainian nation in the current war against Russia-led and Russia-sponsored terrorism in Eastern Ukraine.

ARCAD INC. has also issued financial aid to Volunteers’ Hundred, the volunteers organization helping Ukrainian army soldiers wounded in the Anti-Terrorism Operation (ATO) zone and providing support to refugees from Eastern Ukraine and Crimea. A major part of the organization's efforts go towards providing  medical supplies for the Army Hospital in Kyiv as well as hospitals in the ATO zone. Volunteers’ Hundred also helps with sending wounded warriors to receive necessary treatment abroad. They publish extensive photo reports and information on needs on the organization FB page Volunteers’ Hundred is collaborating with the Canada Ukraine Foundation in Canada and Ukrainian Foundation of America.

ARCAD INC. has recently donated funds to Army SOS, the group of activists supporting Ukrainian army forces in front of the Russian aggression by providing direct supply of required military goods for the Ukrainian soldiers.

ARCAD INC. has committed donating all the company proceeds for the month of July 2014 towards the fight against terrorism in Ukraine. You can contribute to the cause by making donation to trusted funds and groups or by purchasing ARCAD's short circuit, arc flash analysis and labeling software programs and mobile apps. SHORT CIRCUIT ANALYTIC MOBILE HAS BEEN RELEASED  

ARCAD INC. announces the release of Short Circuit Analytic version 1.0 (iSCA V1.0) mobile app for iPhones, iPods and iPads.
iSCA V1.0 mobile app performs available short circuit fault current calculations in three-phase electric power systems you are working with. The app takes into consideration all of the key electrical parameters of power distribution system including power supply, cables, transformers and motors. The app automatically converts the entire system into a unique impedance unit from which the short circuit current and the X/R ratio of the circuit between the source and the fault is calculated at each location.

The source can be set as a transformer supply or a busbar with a specified short circuit level. If a transformer source is used, the short circuit level on the primary side can be set to infinity by setting the data field blank.
  
Add components one by one to build up a single line diagram. The components can be cables, transformers and a motor. After a component has been added, its data can be edited by clicking on the component when displayed on the screen.
  
Click on 'Calculate' button to estimate the short circuit currents at each busbar. The calculations factor in short circuit current contributions from the source and maximum of one motor only. Click on 'Mail' button to send all the equipment data and calculation results by email.

TORONTO, ON - ARCAD INC. announces the release of Short Circuit Analytic version 1.0 (iSCA V1.0) mobile app for iPhones, iPods and iPads.

iSCA V1.0 mobile app performs available short circuit fault current calculations in three-phase electric power systems you are working with. The app takes into consideration all of the key electrical parameters of power distribution system including power supply, cables, transformers and motors.
